  • Appearance: Monarda punctata is characterized by its unique and eye-catching flowers. The flowers are typically pale yellow to cream in color and are adorned with prominent purple to reddish-purple spots or dots, which give the plant its common names. The flowers are tubular and arranged in whorls around the stem. The plant typically reaches a height of 1 to 3 feet (0.3 to 0.9 meters).

  • Habitat: This species is native to a variety of habitats, including open woodlands, prairies, meadows, and sandy or rocky soils. It is often found in areas with well-drained soils and plenty of sunlight. Monarda punctata is distributed across much of North America, from eastern Canada to the southeastern United States.

  • Attracts Pollinators: Like other Monarda species, Monarda punctata is a pollinator magnet. Its tubular flowers are particularly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The unique spotted pattern on the flowers is thought to serve as a landing guide for pollinators.

  • Medicinal and Cultural Uses: Indigenous peoples in North America historically used various parts of Monarda punctata for medicinal purposes. These uses included remedies for colds, fevers, and gastrointestinal issues. Additionally, some Native American tribes incorporated this plant into their traditional ceremonies.

  • Garden Ornamental: Spotted beebalm can be cultivated in gardens and landscapes as an ornamental plant. Its distinctive flowers and ability to attract pollinators make it a valuable addition to native plant gardens and wildlife-friendly landscapes. It is relatively low-maintenance and can tolerate dry conditions once established.

Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
