  • Unique Flower Spikes: One of the defining features of Liatris aspera is its tall, slender flower spikes. The individual flower heads are arranged in a spiky or button-like fashion, creating a distinctive and eye-catching display.
  • Pink to Purple Blooms: The flowers of Rough Blazing Star typically range from pink to purple, adding vibrant color to the late summer garden. The unique shape and arrangement of the blooms make them attractive to pollinators, including butterflies and bees.
  • Attracts Pollinators: Liatris species are known for their appeal to pollinators, and Liatris aspera is no exception. The nectar-rich flowers attract a variety of pollinators, contributing to the biodiversity of the garden.
  • Tolerant of Poor Soils: Rough Blazing Star is adapted to a range of soil conditions, including poor soils. This tolerance makes it suitable for naturalistic landscapes, meadows, or areas with less-than-ideal soil quality.
  • Drought Tolerance: Liatris aspera exhibits good drought tolerance once established. This makes it suitable for gardens in regions with periodic water shortages or for those seeking low-maintenance plants.
  • Vertical Accent in the Garden: With its tall and slender spikes, Rough Blazing Star adds a vertical accent to the garden. It can be used effectively in the middle or back of flower borders, providing height and structure.
  • Wildflower and Prairie Gardens: Due to its native status and adaptability to different soil types, Liatris aspera is well-suited for wildflower gardens and prairie plantings. It can contribute to the restoration of natural habitats and support local ecosystems.
  • Low Maintenance: Once established, Rough Blazing Star is generally low-maintenance. Deadheading spent flowers can prolong the blooming period, and the plants can be divided every few years if needed.

Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
