  • Size: American basswood is a large tree that can reach heights of 60 to 80 feet (18 to 24 meters) or more. It has a straight trunk and a broadly pyramidal to rounded crown.
  • Leaves: The leaves are heart-shaped, simple, and serrated along the edges. They are typically 4 to 7 inches (10 to 18 cm) in length, with a dark green color.
  • Flowers: The tree produces fragrant, pale yellow to cream-colored flowers in early to mid-summer. The flowers are arranged in clusters and are attractive to bees, producing a high-quality honey known as basswood honey.
  • Bark: The bark is light gray and develops furrows and ridges as the tree matures.
  • Habitat: American basswood is adaptable to a variety of soil types but prefers moist, well-drained soils. It is commonly found in forests, along stream banks, and in other wooded habitats.
  • Wildlife Value: The flowers provide a valuable nectar source for bees, and the tree's foliage is consumed by various caterpillars. The seeds are also a food source for some bird species.

Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
