- Size and Growth Form: American elderberry is a medium to large shrub that can reach heights of 5 to 12 feet (1.5 to 3.7 meters). It is known for its upright, spreading growth habit.
- Leaves: The leaves are pinnately compound, consisting of 5 to 11 leaflets. They are arranged oppositely along the stems and have a serrated margin.
- Flowers: Elderberry produces large, flat-topped clusters of small, fragrant, creamy-white flowers. These flower clusters are known as umbels and appear in late spring to early summer.
- Fruit: The plant produces clusters of small, dark purple to black berries in late summer to early fall. The berries are edible and are often used in the culinary and herbal industries.
- Habitat: American elderberry is commonly found in a variety of habitats, including open woods, fields, stream banks, and roadsides. It has a preference for moist, well-drained soils.
- Wildlife Attraction: The berries are attractive to birds, making elderberry a valuable plant for wildlife gardens. However, it's important to note that while the berries are edible for humans when properly prepared, other parts of the plant, such as the leaves and stems, contain toxic compounds and should not be consumed.

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
