  • Fragrant Foliage: As the name suggests, Fragrant Sumac is known for its aromatic foliage. The leaves, when crushed or bruised, release a pleasant, citrus-like fragrance. This characteristic adds sensory appeal to the garden.
  • Low-Growing and Spreading Habit: Fragrant Sumac typically has a low-growing and spreading habit, forming a dense, ground-covering shrub. This makes it useful for erosion control on slopes and for naturalistic landscaping.
  • Drought Tolerance: Rhus aromatica is well-adapted to dry conditions and exhibits good drought tolerance once established. This makes it suitable for landscapes with well-drained soils and where water conservation is a consideration.
  • Fall Color: In the autumn, Fragrant Sumac puts on a colorful display as the leaves turn various shades of red, orange, and yellow. The fall foliage adds seasonal interest to the landscape.
  • Wildlife Value: Fragrant Sumac provides habitat and food for wildlife. The dense, low growth offers cover for small mammals and birds, and the berries are consumed by birds, providing a food source.

    Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
