  • Unique Spherical Flowers: Buttonbush produces spherical, ball-shaped flower clusters that are both visually striking and attractive to pollinators. The small, fragrant, creamy white flowers appear in dense, globe-like inflorescences, earning the shrub its common name.

  • Wildlife Magnet: Buttonbush is a valuable plant for wildlife. Its nectar-rich flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. The resulting seeds are an important food source for birds and waterfowl, contributing to local biodiversity.

  • Habitat and Shelter: The dense growth habit and foliage of buttonbush provide excellent cover and nesting sites for various bird species. It also offers shelter for aquatic and wetland wildlife, making it an important component of wetland ecosystems.

  • Adaptability to Wet Areas: Buttonbush thrives in wet and riparian environments, such as swamps, marshes, and the edges of ponds and streams. Its tolerance for standing water makes it a suitable choice for rain gardens and other water management projects.

  • Native Plant Benefits: As a native plant, Cephalanthus occidentalis is well-suited to local ecosystems. Using native plants in landscaping and restoration projects can help conserve native biodiversity, support local wildlife, and require less maintenance than non-native species.

Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
