  • Habitat and Range: American beach grass is a perennial grass species that is native to the coastal areas of North America, particularly along the Atlantic coast. It is well-adapted to sandy coastal environments, such as dunes and beach areas. American beach grass plays a vital role in stabilizing sand dunes and preventing erosion.

  • Appearance: American beach grass typically grows in dense clumps and has long, narrow leaves with rolled edges to minimize water loss. The grass can reach heights of 2 to 3 feet. It produces tall flower stalks that bear inconspicuous flowers, followed by seedheads with feathery structures.

  • Ecosystem Stabilization: One of the primary ecological roles of American beach grass is dune stabilization. Its extensive root system helps to bind sand together, preventing erosion caused by wind and water. The grass also traps wind-blown sand, allowing dunes to build and protect coastal areas from storm surges and the impacts of coastal erosion.

  • Coastal Protection and Restoration: American beach grass is often used in coastal restoration and erosion control projects. It is planted to establish or enhance sand dune systems, as well as to stabilize newly created or restored dune areas. The grass is effective in reducing erosion and providing long-term protection to vulnerable coastal areas.

  • Importance to Wildlife: American beach grass provides habitat and food for various wildlife species. It offers cover and nesting sites for shorebirds, such as piping plovers and terns, which rely on sandy habitats for breeding. The grass also attracts insects and small invertebrates, which serve as a food source for birds and other animals.

  • American beach grass is a critical plant in coastal ecosystems, playing a vital role in stabilizing dunes and protecting coastal areas from erosion. Its conservation and restoration efforts are important for the preservation of healthy coastal habitats and the species that rely on them.

Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
