- Appearance: American hophornbeam is a relatively slow-growing tree that typically reaches heights of 30 to 50 feet (9 to 15 meters). It has a slender, upright trunk and a rounded crown. The bark is gray-brown and develops shallow furrows as the tree matures. The leaves are alternate, serrated, and somewhat elliptical in shape.
