  • Thorns: As the name suggests, one of the primary features of this variety is its lack of thorns. Unlike the typical honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos), which has long thorns on its branches, thornless honeylocust is thorn-free.
  • Leaves: The leaves are pinnately compound, with small leaflets arranged along a central stem. The foliage is delicate and feathery, creating a light and airy appearance.
  • Bark: The bark of thornless honeylocust is typically smooth and grayish-brown when the tree is young. As it matures, the bark may develop furrows and become more textured.
  • Flowers: Honeylocust trees produce small, greenish-yellow flowers that are not particularly showy. The flowers are typically dioecious, meaning that individual trees are either male or female.
  • Seed Pods: Female trees produce seed pods that are flat, twisted, and resemble large beans. These pods mature in the fall and may persist on the tree into the winter.
  • Adaptability: This variety of honeylocust is known for its adaptability to a wide range of soil types and environmental conditions. It can tolerate drought and is often used in urban settings.

Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
