  • Distinctive White Flowers: Bunchberry produces small, star-shaped, white flowers that resemble those of its larger dogwood relatives. The flowers appear in clusters and are surrounded by four white bracts that are often mistaken for petals. These bracts are actually modified leaves, which make the inflorescence distinctive and attractive.

  • Edible Fruit: The flowers of Cornus canadensis develop into bright red, edible fruit that is often described as looking like miniature apples. The fruit is juicy and slightly tart, making it a snack for wildlife and occasionally for foragers and hikers.

  • Low-Growing Ground Cover: Bunchberry is a creeping, ground-hugging plant that forms dense mats of foliage. It typically grows to a height of 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters) and spreads by rhizomes. This growth habit makes it an excellent choice for ground cover in shaded or woodland areas.

  • Shade Tolerance: Bunchberry thrives in shaded and woodland environments, making it well-suited for gardens and landscapes with partial to full shade. Its ability to thrive in low-light conditions adds to its appeal as a ground cover plant.

  • Wildlife Value: While the fruit is primarily enjoyed by wildlife, such as birds and small mammals, the plant's dense growth provides cover for smaller animals and insects. Bunchberry also contributes to overall biodiversity in forested ecosystems.

Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
