  • Foliage: Kentucky coffeetree has large, pinnately compound leaves with several leaflets. The individual leaflets are large, often reaching lengths of up to 2 feet (60 centimeters). The leaves provide a pleasant dappled shade due to their size and the open growth habit of the tree.

  • Unique Seeds: The tree produces large, brown pods containing seeds that are typically poisonous when raw. However, Native American tribes and early settlers used roasted Kentucky coffeetree seeds as a coffee substitute, which is how the tree acquired its common name.

  • Tolerant of Harsh Conditions: Kentucky coffeetree is known for its adaptability to a wide range of environmental conditions. It can thrive in various soil types, including clay and alkaline soils, and is drought-tolerant once established. This adaptability makes it suitable for urban planting and reforestation projects.

  • Wildlife Value: The seeds of Gymnocladus dioicus, although poisonous to humans, are an important food source for various wildlife, including squirrels, deer, and birds. The tree also provides habitat and nesting sites for birds.

  • Ornamental Value: Despite its relatively large size, the Kentucky coffeetree is sometimes used in landscaping for its unique appearance and attractive foliage. It is valued for its striking winter silhouette, with thick, dark branches and large, distinctive buds.

Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
