  • Appearance: Northern bayberry is a small to medium-sized shrub that typically reaches heights of 3 to 9 feet (0.9 to 2.7 meters). It has simple, leathery leaves that are elliptical or lance-shaped and are dark green on top with a lighter underside. The leaves are aromatic and release a sweet, spicy scent when crushed.

  • Fruit: One of the most distinctive features of Myrica pensylvanica is its waxy, grayish-white berries, which are small and globular. These berries are often clustered along the stems and persist on the shrub throughout the winter. They are a valuable food source for wildlife, especially during the colder months.

  • Habitat: Northern bayberry is typically found in coastal areas, sand dunes, and other well-drained, sandy soils. It is well adapted to salt spray and can tolerate salty, coastal conditions, making it an important plant in stabilizing sand dunes.

  • Candlewax Production: The waxy coating on the berries of Myrica pensylvanica has historically been used to make bayberry candles. To create these candles, the berries were collected and processed to extract the wax. While this practice has largely been replaced by other candle-making materials, bayberry candles are still made as a traditional craft.

  • Wildlife Value: The berries of northern bayberry are a valuable food source for a variety of birds, including migratory species such as cedar waxwings and yellow-rumped warblers. Additionally, the shrub provides shelter and nesting sites for birds and other wildlife, contributing to local ecosystems.

Care Instructions
