  • Carex muskingumensis, commonly known as palm sedge or Muskingum sedge, is a perennial sedge plant native to North America. It is primarily found in the central and eastern parts of the United States, particularly in the Ohio River Valley region.

  • Palm sedge typically grows in moist to wet habitats such as floodplains, marshes, and wet meadows. It prefers full to partial shade and moist, fertile soils. This sedge species is often found in areas that experience periodic flooding.

  • The name "palm sedge" comes from the unique appearance of its leaves. The foliage is broad and palm-like, resembling the shape of a hand or a small palm tree. The leaves can reach a height of 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90 centimeters), adding a dramatic and tropical element to the landscape.

  • Carex muskingumensis produces flowering spikes that emerge from the center of the clump. The flower spikes are tall and slender, typically growing up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) in height. The individual flowers are small and inconspicuous, with male and female flowers appearing on separate spikes.

  • Palm sedge is often cultivated for its ornamental value in garden landscapes and naturalistic plantings. Its unique palm-like foliage and tall flower spikes add interest and texture to gardens with moist or wet conditions. It is also useful for erosion control and streambank stabilization due to its strong root system.

Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
