  • Appearance: Bearberry is a low-growing evergreen shrub that typically reaches a height of 4 to 8 inches. It has oval-shaped, leathery leaves that are dark green on top and lighter underneath. The plant produces small, bell-shaped flowers that are white or pink in color. After flowering, bearberry develops small, bright red berries that persist into the winter.

  • Habitat and Range: Bearberry is native to North America, Europe, and Asia. It can be found in a variety of habitats, including rocky slopes, sandy soils, and alpine regions. Bearberry is well-adapted to harsh growing conditions and is commonly found in areas with poor or acidic soils. In North America, it is particularly prevalent in northern regions.

  • Medicinal Uses: Bearberry has a history of traditional medicinal use by indigenous cultures. It contains bioactive compounds, such as arbutin, which has diuretic properties. Bearberry has been used as a natural remedy for urinary tract infections and other urinary disorders. However, it's important to note that any medicinal use should be approached with caution and under the guidance of knowledgeable practitioners.

  • Wildlife Value: Bearberry provides important habitat and food for wildlife. The berries are a valuable food source for birds and small mammals, such as bears (hence the common name). The dense, low-growing nature of bearberry also offers cover and nesting sites for various bird species and small mammals.

  • Garden and Landscape Use: Bearberry is appreciated for its ornamental qualities and is often cultivated in gardens and landscapes. It can be used as a ground cover in areas with poor or rocky soils, or in rock gardens and naturalistic landscapes. The evergreen foliage and vibrant berries add visual interest and color, especially during the winter months.

  • Bearberry, with its unique appearance, medicinal uses, wildlife value, and ornamental appeal, is a versatile plant for both natural and cultivated landscapes. Its ability to thrive in challenging growing conditions and provide ecological benefits makes it a desirable choice for gardens and restoration projects.

Care Instructions

Different plants have different watering needs. Check the soil moisture by inserting your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, water the plant until the water drains from the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
